The goal is to create and qualify electrical opportunities that belong on your estimate board.

Shared leads create the wrong kind of speed

Electrical work already demands fast judgment. Shared leads add an artificial race on top.

The office may feel pressure to call before anyone reviews:

2. Work fit

Does the request match a service the company wants and can perform?

Ask enough to distinguish:

  • Repair from replacement
  • Branch-circuit work from service equipment work
  • Residential from commercial
  • One device from broader capacity needs
  • A planned project from an urgent safety concern

The customer's wording may be wrong. "Need a bigger breaker" can point to a tripping circuit, new appliance load, failed equipment, or capacity issue. Intake should record the symptom without diagnosing it.

3. Job value

Job value is not only the homeowner's guessed budget.

Estimate potential value from the category and known scope:

  • Panel replacement or service change
  • Utility or meter work
  • Trenching or long conductor runs
  • Load management
  • Generator size and fuel coordination
  • EV charger location and distance
  • Rewiring extent and access
  • Remodel plans and trade coordination

Use ranges internally for routing. Do not turn those ranges into a customer quote until a qualified person has assessed the conditions.

4. Readiness

Is the customer collecting information, planning a project, under contract on a property, or ready to schedule an assessment?

Readiness signals include:

  • Property owner or authorized manager
  • Address provided
  • Reason for the work explained
  • Photos or documents available
  • Decision-makers identified
  • Remodel, vehicle, appliance, or generator timeline known
  • Willingness to complete a site assessment

A customer who is early can still be valuable. Give that person a planning path instead of filling an immediate estimate slot.

5. Safety and urgency

Electrical qualification must never encourage an untrained person to open equipment, remove covers, test conductors, or continue using a suspected hazard.

Ask whether there is:

  • Smoke, fire, arcing, or burning odor
  • Heat, discoloration, or visible damage
  • Repeated tripping
  • Loss of power affecting critical needs
  • Water near electrical equipment
  • Storm, vehicle, or impact damage
  • A shock or tingling sensation

If the situation sounds dangerous, tell the customer to keep away, avoid touching equipment, and use emergency services or the utility where appropriate. The office should follow the company's written emergency protocol.

The National Fire Protection Association provides public electrical fire-safety guidance. Local codes, the authority having jurisdiction, and the serving utility determine project-specific requirements.

Qualify panel and service-upgrade inquiries

Panel work needs more context than "How many amps?"

Ask:

  • What problem or planned addition started the request?
  • Is this a panel replacement, service upgrade, or something not yet determined?
  • What is the property address and type?
  • Approximately when was the home built?
  • Where are the panel and meter located?
  • Are there known labels, damage, or prior recommendations?

  • Parking arrangement

  • Finished areas, trenching, or access constraints
